The Kitchen Stirs at Dusk
This dark, electronic instrumental single was created exclusively with sounds made from scratch (either synthesized, or sampled from real life), and primarily relies on sounds recorded in my kitchen!
This song contains a drum kit made of sounds from my apartment, a flute melody generated from a blown bottle, and glassy pads created using actual glass. It was created as a challenge during Andrew Huang’s masterclass, and definitely brought the fun back!
As a bonus, I now have a small library of sounds that are uniquely me, unavailable anywhere else. I hope to release a sample pack eventually, but for now, I’ll be keeping these sonic secrets to myself.
In the late 90’s my dad, iconic composer Steve Hansen Smythe, embarked on a similar project. He also recorded sounds around our home (including bubbles, alarm clocks, and glass), and created a song titled The Kitchen Stirs at Dawn. Although my version ended up quite acoustically distinct, I find our shared goals and dreams to be tremendously meaningful. Listen to his album, Mostly Harmless, below:
